Betabrite Headlines----------------------------------------------------------

BetabrightHeadlines allows you to scrape headlines from some webpages
and most xml documents that are available on the internet and send it
to a Betabright sign (maybe Alpha Signs also?)

An example data file called Slashdot.bbh is included to get you started.

Fields: ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The "Web Server:" field should not contain "html://" or any slashes, just a server
name.

The "Directory/File on Website" field must contain atleast one slash - usually
a leading slash in front of directories and a filename - if you want to access
the front page of a website, just put a / in this field.

The "Text Before Headline:" field contains the case-sensitive text that appears
before a desired headline.

The "Text After Headline:" field contains the case-sensitive text that appears
after a desired headline.

The "Leading Comment:" field can be used to designate the source of the content.

The "min." field (Auto-Update interval) must be >0 and <5001.

For offline/local practice, readme_localhost.xml is included which can be copied
to your webserver; an example configuration file called "localhost.bbh" is
included which will access readme_localhost.xml on your webserver.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please read the "Terms of Use" for your target website content as some companies
don't allow public rebroadcast of their content, but this is essentially a
browser, so using their data for personal use still may be ok in most cases.

(( personally I think it's good advertising for the news websites to allow
importing of headlines since I will go to the original news website whenever
I notice an interesting news headline on the Betabrite sign -- The field
"Leading Comment:" reminds me what site I need to go to ))

(( if you know of another news/etc site in addition to Slashdot that encourages
or atleast allows importing of headlines, let me know so I can post your
*.bbh file - please include a link to their "Terms of Use" page
 -- wallin@pobox.com ))

Please keep those Auto-Update values high so that you don't get your IP
address banned from your favorite site - besides, the sign blinks on update and
a low refresh interval will be very noticible.

Low Auto-Updates values are allowed incase you have some way to use this
application with one of your own websites and need that feature.

For most sites, 180 minutes or more may be a safe AutoUpdate value to choose.

Some websites such as Slashdot.org allow polling their xml headline document,
but they suggest a polling time of 30 minutes or longer.

This application will probably find itself also turned into a task tray icon
or NT Service, time permitting.

Updates for this application and other applications can be found at:
http://www.remote-control.net/software/

If you need a simpler program to test your new cable that you just put together,
a BetabriteHelloWorld program is available at the above website also which will
send one line of text to the Betabrite sign.

Both of these programs write to File A of the sign and don't do anything with
run sequences or anything else yet;

This program will display most extended ascii characters including those that are encoded in HTML (¡)
